SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Suga, a member of K-pop supergroup BTS, began fulfilling his mandatory military duty Friday as a social service agent, an alternative form of military service in the country. Suga, 30, became the group’s third member to start carrying out their military duties. BTS’s management agency, Big Hit Music, said that Suga later began commuting to a workplace designated under the country’s alternative military service system. Those performing alternative service are subject to three weeks of basic military training and can choose when to take it, according to the Military Manpower Administration.

Perms, or the permanent wave, have been a fixture of American culture since the late 19th century and reached peak popularity in the 1970s and 1980s. While beauty trends, like fashion, are cyclical, perms today differ greatly from those once seen on stars like Cher and Stevie Nicks, thanks to gentler products and digitized heat technology. Digital perms, or hot perms, have also become popular. “It certainly helps that K-Pop and K-Dramas are popular and the stars get perms, so that has made it more culturally acceptable,” said Chen. Wella’s Munz is hopeful the resurgence of perms will also encourage brands to further engage with the multicultural consumer.

The BTS band members are working solo these days. A new deal with Lego A/S will put the K-Pop sensation’s historically strong influence and marketability to the test. Lego said Thursday it was collaborating with the South Korean band on a so-called BTS Dynamite set. It features blocks that replicate some scenes from the group’s music video for the hit song “Dynamite,” including a doughnut shop, record store, basketball court and stage. Geared toward adults, the set includes miniature figures of the seven members and has a mechanism that allows them to move in sync when they’re positioned on the stage.

SEOUL—The eldest member of the South Korean boy band BTS will be conscripted for the country’s mandatory military service later this year, ending a debate over whether the singers’ cultural achievements should merit an exemption.
